Zakopane in the rain: what to do when the mountains are out

Rain in the Tatras can settle in for the whole day, and then the entire town starts looking for somewhere under a roof. It is worth having plan B ready in advance, before every cafe on Krupówki runs out of free tables.

First the bad news: everyone has the same idea

When it rains, tens of thousands of tourists give up on the trails at the same moment and come down to the centre. Queues form at the thermal baths, at the museums and at every cafe on the promenade. That is why a rainy day plan is best started early in the morning, or deliberately kept away from the front row on Krupówki.

Morning: coffee and a seat by the fireplace

Instead of fighting for a table on the promenade, it is worth walking down to Zaruskiego street, 300 metres from Krupówki. Aperitif Bar opens daily at 9:00 and until noon works in a cafe rhythm. A highlander interior of stone, wood and leather with a fireplace is exactly the kind of place where the rain outside stops being a nuisance and starts fitting the mood.

A good two hours can be spent here with coffee, a book or a laptop. If you are travelling with children there is a separate menu for the youngest guests, and the venue is open to everyone during the day, with no age limits.

Midday: a long lunch instead of a quick meal

On a rainy day there is no point in hurrying. The kitchen at Aperitif Bar is open from 13:00 to 21:45, so lunch can be stretched out calmly. The menu has soups from 20 PLN, salads and burgers from 46 to 57 PLN, pasta, salmon and beef tenderloin at 120 PLN, plus desserts: apple pie with custard, cheesecake with raspberries and ice cream.

The rule for rainy days is: come before 13:30 or after 15:00. The busiest moment is the middle of the lunch hour, between 13:30 and 15:00.

Afternoon: what else works under a roof

Beyond eating, rainy Zakopane has a few proven options: the thermal baths around the town, the Tatra Museum, the art galleries on Krupówki and a session at a hotel spa. They all share one feature: on rainy days there are queues, so it is worth buying tickets online first thing in the morning.

When the weather gives you a short break, the best mud-free walk is Krupówki and the streets around it, rather than the trails, which after rainfall can stay slippery for the rest of the day.

Evening: the rain stops mattering

After dark the weather stops being a problem, because the evening moves indoors anyway. On Thursdays and at weekends, at the same address as Aperitif Bar, Cocktail Room opens with a menu of more than a dozen cocktails, and on Fridays and Saturdays Music Loft plays until 5:00 in the morning. The whole evening, from dinner through drinks to the dance floor, closes under one roof, with no dashing between venues in the rain.

Frequently asked questions

What to do in Zakopane when it rains?
The safest plan is the centre: coffee and lunch at Aperitif Bar on Zaruskiego 5, the thermal baths or a museum in the afternoon and the evening in Cocktail Room or the club. On rainy days every place under a roof is busier than usual, so it is worth setting off first thing in the morning. Trails after rainfall can be slippery even once it clears up.
Where to take shelter from the rain near Krupówki?
At Aperitif Bar, 300 metres from Krupówki, open daily from 9:00 to 23:00. The interior with a fireplace lets you wait out even a full day of rain over coffee, lunch or a glass of wine. You walk in from the street, no booking needed.
Is it worth going up into the mountains in the rain?
No, after rainfall the trails are slippery and fog hides the views, so the risk grows faster than the reward. It is better to move the trip to the next day and check the forecast in the evening. A rainy day in the centre can be filled without any sense of a wasted day.
What to do in Zakopane in the evening when it rains?
In the evening the rain stops getting in the way, because life happens indoors anyway: on Thursdays and Sundays Cocktail Room is open from 21:00, and on Fridays and Saturdays Music Loft runs a dance floor from 21:30 until 5:00. All three Le Scandale spaces are at one address, so there is no need to move around the town. It starts with dinner at Aperitif Bar.
Can you bring children to Aperitif Bar?
Yes, during the day Aperitif Bar is open to everyone, with no age limits and no door selection. The menu has a separate section for children: tomato soup, chicken fingers and pancakes at 20-24 PLN. Age limits apply only to the evening club zones.
Where to eat in Zakopane on a rainy day without waiting?
The safest bet is away from the front row of Krupówki, for example at Aperitif Bar on Zaruskiego 5, and outside the lunch peak. The busiest window is between 13:30 and 15:00, so lunch before or after that usually means no queue. A table can also be held by phone: +48 530 331 531.
Are the thermal baths near Zakopane a good idea in the rain?
Yes, but it is an idea most tourists have at the same time, so tickets need to be bought online in the morning. An early dinner in the centre fits well after coming back from the baths. In high season the queues at the baths can run to an hour.
How to check the Tatra weather for the next day?
Best in the evening, using the mountain forecast for the Tatras rather than the general one for the town, because the weather in the valleys and on the ridges can be completely different. If the forecast is rainy again, it is worth booking a table for the next day straight away. In season, rainy days are the busiest ones for restaurants.
