Pornstar Martini, Negroni and Paloma: the classics you order most often

There are cocktails everyone knows, and there are the ones you have to hear about from the bartender. This list starts with the former. We have gathered the drinks from our menu that are searched for most often in Poland, and described what to expect from them.

Why these drinks

A classic is not a classic because it is old. It is a classic because its proportions cannot be improved, and because it works regardless of the season, the mood and who is standing behind the bar. The drinks below have one more thing in common: they are the most searched cocktails on the Polish internet, and at the same time drinks that genuinely stand on our Alternatives Vol. 2 menu.

Below, briefly, about each of them: the build, the flavour profile and a hint as to who will like it.

Pornstar Martini, number one

The most ordered cocktail in the world and the drink most guests start with. It was created in London at the turn of the century and is built on three things: vanilla vodka, passion fruit and a glass of prosecco served alongside.

We make it on Grey Goose with vanilla, with passion fruit and prosecco. It is fruity, sparkling and sweet-and-sour, but it finishes dry, because passion fruit brings plenty of acidity. The glass of prosecco is drunk separately, between sips, not poured into the drink.

Next to it stands its sharper brother, Pornstar Scandal: instead of vodka there is Bacardí Reserva Ocho rum, and the passion fruit is joined by chilli and tabasco. The same flavour base, a completely different finish. For those who like something to happen in a drink.

Who it is for: those who like it fruity and sparkling, as the first drink of the evening.

Negroni and Cocoa Negroni

Three ingredients in equal proportions, stirred in the glass, no shaker. Gin, bitter and red vermouth. Nothing more and nothing less. Negroni divides people: either you love it from the first sip, or you have to grow into it.

Our version stands on Bombay Sapphire, Martini Bitter and Martini Rubino. It is bitter, herbal, with a clear orange note and a long finish. Firmly an aperitif, not a dessert.

For those who want to soften that bitterness we have Cocoa Negroni: the same duo of bitter and vermouth, but with cacao blanco and prosecco. The cocoa rounds off the bitter edges, the prosecco adds bubbles. It is a Negroni for people who claim they do not like Negroni.

Who it is for: those who like it dry and bitter, excellent before dinner.

Paloma, the Mexican classic

In Mexico more of it is drunk than margarita, although in Poland it is only now gaining popularity. It is the simplest possible idea: tequila, grapefruit juice, lime and a pinch of salt.

Our Paloma is made on Tequila 1800 Reposado with agave, grapefruit soda and lime. It is refreshing, lightly salty-sour and decidedly less sweet than most tequila drinks. It works well as the second or third cocktail of the evening, when the palate has had enough sugar.

Who it is for: those who like it citrusy and dry, and for grapefruit fans.

Side Car and Aki Cocktail, a pair on cognac

Side Car is one of the oldest cocktails on the menu: cognac, triple sec and lemon. Ours is on Hennessy VS. Dry, citrus and orange led, with a clear structure. A classic in its purest form.

Aki Cocktail is our variation on the same base: Hennessy VS, mandarin and angostura. Rounder, spicier, with a fruity sweetness that Side Car does not have.

Who it is for: those who like stronger, dry drinks without bubbles.

Singapore Sling and Jungle Bird

Two drinks for those who want something more elaborate.

Singapore Sling has eight ingredients and is one of the most complex cocktails on the menu: Bombay Sapphire, Cherry Heering, Dom Bénédictine, Cointreau, lime, grenadine, pineapple and angostura. Cherry and pineapple led, with a long, multi-layered finish.

Jungle Bird is where rum meets bitter: Bacardí Reserva Ocho, Martini Bitter, lime, pineapple and angostura. Sweet and bitter, exotic, a good bridge between the classics and our tiki menu.

Who it is for: the curious, who order what they do not know.

And if you are after coffee

Espresso Martini has its own place with us and its own text. We make it on Grey Goose with vanilla and cold brew, and in Aperitif Bar on classic espresso. The details, the history and the most common mistakes in preparing it are in the text Espresso Martini: why it came back and how it is made properly.

Frequently asked questions

Which cocktail is ordered most often?
Pornstar Martini, both worldwide and here. It is a cocktail on vanilla vodka with passion fruit and a glass of prosecco served alongside. In Cocktail Room we make it on Grey Goose, and next to it we serve our own sharper version, Pornstar Scandal, on rum with chilli and tabasco.
What does a Negroni taste like?
Bitter, herbal and orange led, with a long dry finish. It is three ingredients in equal proportions: gin, bitter and red vermouth, stirred in the glass without a shaker. If the bitterness is too much for you, try Cocoa Negroni with cacao blanco and prosecco, which softens that profile.
How is Paloma different from a margarita?
Both stand on tequila, but Paloma is lighter and less sweet: instead of orange liqueur and a salted rim it has grapefruit juice, lime and a pinch of salt. In Mexico more of it is drunk than margarita. It is a good choice when you want refreshment rather than dessert.
Which cocktail do you recommend at the start of the evening?
To begin with, something fruity and sparkling works well, that is Pornstar Martini, or something dry, that is Negroni as a classic aperitif. If the evening is going to be long, it is worth starting with a lighter drink and moving gradually to the stronger ones. The bartenders will gladly advise for a particular taste.
How much do cocktails cost in Cocktail Room?
Drinks with a price listed on the menu cost from 34 to 45 PLN, for example Cocoa Negroni and Jungle Bird at 45 PLN each, and the alcohol-free Zero Tiki at 34 PLN. The full price list for all drinks is available at the bar. The prices match cocktail bars in large cities.
Will the bartender make a drink that is not on the menu?
Yes, simply say which direction of flavour you like or which spirit you are in the mood for. Off-menu orders are a normal part of the bar's work here, not an exception. It is the simplest way to land on your own drink.
What spirits are on the back bar?
Among others Grey Goose and Grey Goose Altius, Hennessy VS, Bombay Sapphire Premier Cru, Glenmorangie 12YO, Woodford Reserve, Patrón tequilas led by El Cielo, and Bacardí and Planteray rums. Every drink on the menu is built on that base. For the rarer bottles it is best to ask the bartenders.
Where can you drink a good cocktail in Zakopane?
In Cocktail Room at Le Scandale, ul. Zaruskiego 5, 300 metres from Krupówki. It is a two-level bar with more than a dozen drinks on the classic menu, a separate tiki menu and five alcohol-free cocktails. Open on Thursdays and Sundays from 21:00 and on Fridays and Saturdays from 21:30.
