Where to eat in Zakopane near Krupówki, without queues and crowds

Krupówki has one flaw: in high season everything along it is full, loud and built around turning tables over fast. The good news is that you only need to step three minutes off the main promenade to eat in peace.

Why it pays to step off Krupówki

The main promenade of Zakopane is the most crowded restaurant street in the Tatras. In July and in the winter season, waiting for a table there at lunchtime takes longer than the meal itself. Venues along Krupówki are set up for passing traffic, so the menu is short, the service quick, and conversation at the table happens over noise.

A few hundred metres away the rhythm is completely different. On Zaruskiego street, about 300 metres from the promenade, there is no flow of people forcing anyone to hurry. It is still the very centre, a minute's walk from Krupówki.

What to look at when choosing a place

Kitchen hours, not venue hours. This is the most common trap. A bar may be open until 23:00, but the kitchen closes two hours earlier. Always check that second number.

Whether you can walk in from the street. Some places in the centre work by reservation only, or are part of a hotel with a separate entrance for guests. It is worth knowing in advance whether you can simply walk in.

Whether there is room for conversation. If you are planning dinner for two or a business meeting, the noise level matters more than the menu.

Aperitif Bar: food in the centre from morning to evening

Aperitif Bar at Zaruskiego 5 is open daily from 9:00 to 23:00, and the kitchen works from 13:00 to 21:45. It is the first of the three Le Scandale spaces and the only one open seven days a week. The entrance is from the street, with no door selection and no booking needed.

The menu has starters and soups, main courses, desserts and a separate children's section. Prices start at 20 PLN for bouillon, through salads and burgers at 46 to 57 PLN, up to beef tenderloin at 120 PLN. The seasonal lunch menu works well in the middle of the day, and in the evening the same place shifts into a calmer mood.

The interior is highlander in the good sense: stone, wood and leather, comfortable armchairs and a fireplace. It is a layout that works both for a break from sightseeing and for a business meeting, because you can talk here without raising your voice.

When to come

  • Morning and late morning are the calmest. Coffee and a seat by the fireplace with no waiting.
  • Between 13:00 and 16:00 the kitchen is running, a natural time for lunch after coming off the trail.
  • After 19:00 the venue moves into evening mode. A glass of wine or a cocktail before the rest of the night.
  • On a rainy day it is worth arriving early, because the whole town is looking for a place under a roof.

What comes next the same evening

Two more spaces operate at the same address, opening later. Cocktail Room welcomes guests on Thursdays and Sundays from 21:00, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 21:30. Music Loft plays on Fridays and Saturdays from 21:30 until 5:00 in the morning. Thanks to that the whole evening can be planned without changing address and without looking for a taxi in the middle of the night.
